Days: What’s Next for Marlena
“The emotional impact is massive,” understates Executive Producer Ken Corday about what happens to Marlena in the aftermath of John’s death, which happens this week. “It bring the DiMera vendetta finally to a head there will be hell to pay. The one who will be exacting that payment is Marlena.”
But first, Marlena has to deal with the loss of her beloved. “She is completely undone by its,” says Deidre hall. “There’s this wonder scene where Belle comes in the next moring and the two of them talk about the nature of grief, and the writing on these shows is so beautiful. Marlena goes on to describe what it’s like to lose someone that you loved who is that much a part of your core and admits that she hasn’t been in this place before. She talks abour the hypocrisy of her trying to minister to people who have had great loss and the audacity to presume that she could help them or know what they were going through. The words they have written for these days is remarkable. It’s honesty and it’s courage.”
Marlena then summons the strength to bury her husband. “She gets through the funeral fine,” previews Hall. “Everybody gets up and does a weeping eulogy and in the moment, she says, ‘We have to be strong,’ and she is. She doesn’t cry. She thanks them for coming and she’s a pillar.” The Stefano shows up. “She blasts him----and it’s a true blasting. She is powerful as we’ve ever seen her. It’s a mama lion: “Don’t get near my family again.”
Fans will get their wish that Marlena has a place to call home. Unfortunately, John is not around anymore to enjoy it. “She walks into the empty apartment and sees his coats and his book that he was reading still open and his coffee cup and the smell of him an the room and she’s done,” sighs Hall.
Philip to Belle: I love you
Kayla, Steve and Philip gather at the hospital and learn that Pocket wasn’t poisoned---he suffers from a rare, genetic condition called MMA. Philip want to take his son home, but Mrs. Meyers from CPS points out that paternity has not been established yet. Pockets’ new foster parents arrive to take the baby and Kayla pulls Philip aside and explains to him that his biological son can’t fill the hole in his heart. A confused Philip heads to church where he runs into a grieving Belle. He admits he’s thinking of letting the foster parents keep Pocket, then drops the bomb that he still loves Belle and wants her back. He then pulls her into a kiss. “he plants a big one on her!” says MM. “She’s shocked, but eventually pushed away. It’s a little awkward.” Still, MM notes that Philip has qualities that Belle appreciates. “He’s strong, supportive, independent and she’s attracted to that side of him,” says MM. “He doesn’t try to control her and lets her feel that she can be independent and she likes that.”

Black Out
It’s almost impossible to believe, but this week, John Black Day’s top gun since 1986 dies as a result of the hit and run with Marlena, Belle and Sami by his side. Fan Favorite Drake Hogestyn says he learned of his character’s demise from EP Ken Corday. “[He] called me at home---that’s usually not a good thing,” says the actor. “Whenever there are changes in head-writing or producing, other changes are imminent. I wasn’t shocked by the news. My fan gather in June? John Black’s Final Mission. My instincts have always served me well.”
Co-star Deidre hall admits she was stunned. “I had been give the information in small bites,’ she explains. “We knew that Drake’s contract was up in December, we knew that he was way below his guarantee, we knew that he hadn’t had a storyline ,which are never good signs. Of course, the sense was that there is simply, no possibility this thing won’t work out: they’ll just be using him much heavier coming up. Drake came into work one day and he confided that ken had told him it was bad news and they weren’t going his direction, so they were going to kill the character. And our show has been famous for killing people/not killing people, so I thought, ‘Yeah right.’ As time wore on, it began to look more like that’s what they were doing and by his last day, it was perfectly clear to me that he was done.”
Indeed, John takes his last breat in the hospital on October 17, which for Hogestyn, was no easy feat. “Through Method acting and sleep deprivation, those scenes were all a blur,” he says.
Hall knew it would be tough to shoot once she had read the script. “It was the same thing every time, from the moment I read it on the treadmill and couldn’t stop crying to when I went to do it” There was no rehearsal---I couldn’t not weep through it. When it was over, I couldn’t stop weeping, so I cried for about a half an hour after we wrapped. I just stood onstage and watched him say good-bye to people and wept. It was terrible and unspeakably painful. I was so distraught. That’s when people finally got it that this is not a joke; this is good bye.”
Alison Sweeney says she was one of the cast member who never believed Hogestyn was out. “The whole day, I was like, “Please, it can’t be true.’ You kind of get hardened to people leaving, especially after the storylines over the past few years,’ she allows. “The day of his death, I had a different set of scenes and I came in at the end, so I was emotionally removed from it until those last two scenes. Deidre’s performance? Honestly, it’s what pushed me to the point of it sinking in and being real. There was that moment after Dee says good-bye to him and has to tell him to go to sleep, which was the most gorgeous, yet painful and heartbreaking scene, and she didn’t stop crying afterward. To see her standing quietly sobbing by herself? Martha and I were standing on the other side of Drake’s bed and we started crying, too. I said to her, ‘Dee, please sop. You’re killing me here.’ That’s the moment I realized it was over.’
These scenes Sweeney mentions will be especially poignant for the fans, previews Hall. “What Drake and I were doing was a profound connection,” she says. “He was weeping the whole time. I’m not even sure you’ll see it on camera. The sense of time is running out here was certainly palpable on the stage. The whole crew said they had to look away, they couldn’t even bear to hear it. Marlena says, ‘It’s okay to go, it’s okay to leave,’ and he doesn’t want to and Marlena says, ‘You’re always afraid you’ll miss something.’ His line is, “I’ll miss you,’ and it was the most wonderfully written profound line that ever was. And he sobbed through it and it finished everybody off. It is and exquisite week of work and it’s must watch. The nuances in the scenes are heartbreaking. It is like a present that you give the audience when you leave. It’s the intimacy they’ve been longing for a long time.”
Still that didn’t cushion the blow of Hogestyn’s exit. “The last day we worked together, it was surreal,” Hall reflects. “It was empty and hollow and sad he chose to have no cake, no speeches because those things can be deeply emotional and painful and wrenching and it wasn’t the way he wanted to handle his last day.” Besides missing her long time co-star, she says “What I truly miss is the please it brings the fans. I think we’re a couple that has been a trademark for so many years and there’s a sense of comfort and reassurance that comes from us being together that I think it spreads itself over the audience.”
But this being DAYS, is there a possibility that John isn’t really dead? “John Black has met his maker,” insists Hogestyn. Says Martha Madison: “I’m devastated if Drake is leaving. Days is famous for killing and bringing back people, but at this point, none of us know what is going on. I’ll continuously keep my fingers crossed that Drake isn’t leaving.” Adds Hall, “I would be naïve to say no to that because it’s never say never. The indications and earmarking are that we won’t see him again, but we’ve done it before, so I have said my good-byes, and if he comes back then it would be wonderful.”
It’s Only My Opinion by Carolyn Hinsey
CH talks about what can be learned from Days descent to the bottom of the ratings:
-Make fans mad enough they will go away. Promising a big story for J&M for a year and not delivering is the same as changing the channel for the viewers
-Don’t put all your storyline eggs into one basket. There has been no other front burner story for 9 months. Why bring back Anna but not use her?
-Filling up the screen with strangers such as Jeremy and Jett.
Days needs to crank up the romance “…give the fans you’ve got left the story they’ve been clamoring for (John and Marlena!)…….”
